The Almora Urban Cooperative Bank Limited (AUCB) was established on August 14, 1991, with its first branch in Chauk Bazar, Almora, the cultural center of Uttarakhand, thanks to the efforts of local residents and groups. The bank's headquarters remains in Lala Bazaar, Almora. By 1997, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) permitted the bank to expand its operations across the entire Kumaon Region of Uttarakhand. It currently operates as an Urban Co-operative Bank (UCB) under the state co-operative societies act, and by the financial year 2022-23, it had a network of 50 to 65 branches and 26 to 30 ATMs spread across Uttarakhand.

The AUCB is considered the largest Urban Co-operative Bank in North India. Its significance in the Indian financial system lies in its role as a key financial institution for the state of Uttarakhand, where it offers a wide range of services to individual customers, commercial enterprises, and public bodies. The bank has been noted for its consistent performance, maintaining "Zero" net Non-Performing Assets (NPA) and high Capital to Risk-weighted Assets Ratio (CRAR) in recent years, and it was the first bank in Uttarakhand's cooperative sector to become a direct member of the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI). By March 31, 2023, the bank's total business mix had crossed ₹4,700 crore, reflecting its dominant position within the regional cooperative banking landscape.
